The Moorish idol is a fish that can be found in one of the tank of the aquarium in Mauritius. Its scientific name is zanclus cornutus. It forms part of the siganidae family. It has a typical colour pattern with two large black bands separated by a white-yellowish band, a black tail, a typical yellow and black saddle on the snout. It can attain a length of 16 cm. Encountered in many environments, from bay and lagoon to the back reef, reef front, external reef, deep reef up to more than 180 meters depth. They are usually used to move in small groups. Their main foods are sponges, algae and other invertebrates. The Moorish idol has a quite long larval life, during which it travels over long distances. In Mauritius the Moorish idol is known as “ pavillon cocher”.
