Art Galleries in Mauritius

 

There are in Mauritius some well known artists, some are still living in Mauritius and expose their paints and arts in the different art galleries of the island.

 

Some other artists born in Mauritius left the country and became popular in other countries as in France, England or Germany.

 

Xavier Le Juge passed away in February 1954. His paintings have been exhibited in the art galleries of Mauritius and Reunion Island.

 

Xavier Le Juge was a famous artist in Mauritius. He was born at Pamplemousses, a small village in the north of Mauritius, on 16 August 1871. Xavier le Juge was interested in art and paintings since he was a child.

 

At the age of twenty seven he held a painting exhibition in the country which was a great success.

The art exhibition brought him some funds which enabled him to travel to France in Paris to study art at the Beaux Arts School.

But as he had financial difficulties he returned back to Mauritius without ending his art studies.

When he was back he worked for over twenty five years as an art teacher at the Royal College of Curepipe. Malcolm de Chazal born the 12 September 1902 at Vacoas in Mauritius was also a famous artist but also well known as a writer and poet. His parents were originally from France, all of his writings were done in French.

 

Andrée Poilly was born on 13 February 1905 as Bécherel. She had a real passion for art but worked as a teacher before making of art her career. She was well known for abstract art. She made exhibitions of her paintings in England and in Canada. In December 1990 she passed away in Quebec.

 

Hervé Masson was born at Curepipe in Mauritius on 17 January 1919. In 1949 he went to France where he became famous as an artist. He got a lot of his paintings exhibited in well known art galleries. He came back to Mauritius for three years in 1970 and then went back and continued his exhibitions. The art of Hervé Masson are found in different countries including USA, France, Netherlands, Mexico and Germany. In France his art can be found at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris and at the Musée de Sceaux. He passed away in Paris on the 13 May 1990.

Gaëtan de Rosnay was born in 1912 at Pamplemousses was very interested in art since youngest ages and went to study art in France. After his studies he came back to his native island and worked with his parents and it was only later that he started his career as artist while joining a group of local artists. He won several prizes for his paintings including Le Prix de la Société de Beaux Arts. Gaëtan de Rosnay passed away in France in 1992; his paintings are exposed in some famous museums in France, Versailles and Rambouillet.

As you can observe most of the well known Mauritian artists became famous when they left the country.
