Country name: Republic of Mauritius but usually called Mauritius. The island is only a republic since 1992.

Flag of Mauritius: The flag of Mauritius is represented by four horizontal bands of colours which are in the order of Red, Blue, Yellow and Green.

Location: The Republic of Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar.

Mauritius Currency: The currency of Mauritius is the Mauritian Rupee. The notes of Mauritius are as followed Rs2000, Rs1000, Rs500, Rs200, Rs100, Rs50 and Rs25. The coins are Rs10, Rs5, Rs1, 50 cents, 20 cents and 5 cents.

Area: Mauritius has a total area of 2,040 square kilometres and a total land area of 2,030 square kilometres. The size of Mauritius can be compared to the city of Hamburg in Germany.

Capital: The capital city of Mauritius is Port Louis.

Airport: The main airport is at Plaisance, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport.

Port: The port and harbour is located at Port Louis.

Nationality: Mauritian.

Population: The population of Mauritius has been estimated to 1,240,827 in 2006.

Languages: English is the official language of Mauritius but most spoken is French and Creole.

Districts and Dependencies of Mauritius: Mauritius is divided into nine districts which are Plaines Wilhems, Pamplemousses, Black River, Port Louis, Moka, Rivière du Rempart, Flacq, Savanne, and Grand Port. Mauritius has three dependencies which are Rodrigues, Agalega Islands and Cargados Carajos Shoals.

Independence Day: The Independence Day is celebrated on the 12 March of every year since 1968, year in which Mauritius got its independence.

National Day: Mauritius celebrates the National Day also on the 12 March since 1968.

Government Type: The government type of Mauritius is parliamentary democracy.

Political parties of Mauritius: Militant Socialist Movement also known as MSM, Alliance Social  also known as AS, Mauritian Militant Movement known as MMM, Mauritian Democrat Party known as PMSD, Mauritian Labor Party known as MLP, Rodrigues Movement known as MR and Rodrigues Peoples Organization known as PPR.

Religions: Mauritius is composed of Hindus which is the most population of the island, the rest are Catholic, Christians, Muslim and Chinese.

Bank Hours: Banks are usually open from Monday to Friday from nine am to three pm. There are some exceptions some banks are open on Fridays until 3.30 pm. Saturday, Sunday and public holidays banks are closed.

Shopping Hours: Usually shops are open from 9.30 am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday, Sunday from 9.30am to noon. Shopping centres are open everyday from Monday to Thursday usually from 9.30 am to 7 pm or 8 pm, Friday and Saturday from 9.30 am to 9pm and on Sundays and public holidays some are open from 9,30 am to noon and others are open until 5pm. There are some towns where shops are closed on Thursday afternoon.

Post Office Hours: The Post Office Hours in Mauritius are from Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4 pm, during lunch time it is closed from 11.15 am to noon. On Saturdays the post offices are open from 8am to 11.15am. In the Post Offices of Mauritius stamps are available.

Credits Cards: Credits Cards are easily accepted in Mauritius, the most common credit cards are MasterCard, Visa Dinners Club and American Express.

Legal System: The laws of Mauritius are mainly based on French civil laws and in some areas some common English has been integrated.

Judicial Branch: The judicial branch of Mauritius is the Supreme Court.

Mauritius Industries: The industries of Mauritius consist mainly of sugar milling, tourism, textiles, clothing, metal products, chemicals and transport equipment.

Driving:  In Mauritius drivers need to drive on the left side of the street and priority to the right as in United Kingdom. Visitors need a driving license from their countries or an International Driving License to drive in Mauritius.

Medical Services: Hospitals are free of charge in Mauritius and there are also paying clinics in Mauritius.

Tips: Giving tips is very common in Mauritius but is not a must.
