Mauritius is an island located in the Indian Ocean close to Reunion and Rodrigues Islands. As Mauritius is an island, it is surrounded of sea and beaches. Mauritius Island is considered as a paradise with its kilometres of white sandy beaches and blue turquoise sea. For visitors coming to the island there are tours organised by tour operators or you can also rent a car and decide where to go by using a plan. But there is one thing with the plans of Mauritius you will not find detailed plans. The island is not enormous so it is quite easy to drive around. Do not forget that in Mauritius you need to drive left hand side.
The tours around the island can be planed by region if you are driving yourself. Each side of Mauritius has very interesting places to visit. By visiting the island you will also learn about its culture, people and history.
When you are staying in a hotel there are also tours which are organised by the hotel. Most of the time they have their own transports which are little buses which can afford around fifteen to twenty people with a guide who will give information all along the trip.
The northern part of the island is a quite touristic area, Grand Bay is a village well known to all visitors. Lots of bars and discos are found in Grand Bay.

You will also discover in the north fishing villages as Cap Malheureux where is also located the famous church with a red roof.
Still in the north Pereybere Beach is a very famous and known as one of the best beaches on the island.
Along the northern coast there are also lots of small islands. Triolet is a small and longest village where you can visit an Indian temple known as the Triolet Shivala or Maheswarnath, the temple was constructed in 1819 in honour of Hindu gods.
Visit Pamplemousses village and the Pamplemousses Gardens. Discover also Port Louis the capital of Mauritius.
The west side of the island is getting more and more popular. Flic en Flac is one of the most popular beaches of the west.
When you drive towards Tamarin you will see the salt pans along the road, the village is the main area of salt productions

Between Flic en Flac and Tamarin, along the main road going direction Tamarin find Casela, a park mainly with bird species.
You like nature then you can also visit the Yemen Park. Along Tamarin Bay it is known to be a famous place to see black dolphins. Chamarel where is seen the famous seven coloured earth.
Le Morne is known to the surfers as on this side of the island it is quite windy.
The Black River Gorges very popular and where you have a spectacular view.

In the south of the island you can visit Domaine des Chasseur. The southern coastal part of the island is quite different from the rest of the island. Discover Gris Gris, not recommended to swim, from the cliffs you will have a magnificent view. Mahebourg is small village which has been named after Mahé de Labourdonnais the first French Governor of the island and the founder of Port Louis.
The eastern side of the island is a calm place. Visit the village of Trou d’eau Douce which is also the meeting point of the sailing boats which bring the visitors to the famous little island of Ile aux Cerfs. At Belle Mare find the water park and enjoy yourself the sandy beaches. Discover Flacq village and its market place. The Grand River South East waterfall also found in the eastern part, the mouth of the river is known for swimming, diving and picnics on the riverbanks.
Inside the island discover the Grand Bassin very famous place where is found the Ganga Talao a pilgrimage site and sacred lake for Mauritian Hindus. Visit the tea factory of Bois Cheri and its museum.
