Police Force in Mauritius

 

As in every country, Mauritius Island has of course a police force. Police organization can be traced since the French colonized the island. In 1767, Guillaumes Desranges de Richeteaux was appointed as Police Inspector.A CID organization exists since July 1794 which was formed for Port Louis.

 

A police Headquarters was created in October 1803 by Decaen which was under the charge of an “agent general de Police” who was a Justice of Peace too. Later on, it was replaced by “Tribunal de Premiere Instance”.
Football is a very important sport for Mauritian. Mauritius has different football groups formed locally.


In the past, the Police Headquarters was situated at Places d’Armes aside the Government House facing the sea. Afterwards in 1810, it was transferred to Pope Henessy Street.

It was only in 1922 that it has its actual location at Line Barracks.

During the time of Mahé Labourdonnais, the construction of Line Barracks started, which was in 1740 and ended in 1774, the date can still be seen engraved on the gate in Deschartes Street.

During the British colonial in 1810, Mr. Blane took command of the Police Force.
The police ordinance was enacted in 1893 and has now been replaced by the Police Act 1974.

Until 1934, the chief of the Police Force was called Inspector General of Police and now it has changed to Commissioner of Police.
Nowadays the Mauritius Police force is fully responsible to the civil authorities which includes the Special Mobile Force a paramilitary wing, the Police Helicopter Squadron an air wing and the National Coast Guard which is the naval wing.

Normally in every city and town of Mauritius, there is a Police Station for the population. So for any problem you have and that you need the help of police just call the nearest police force.
