This giant statue that you see on the above picture was taken in Grand Bassin, this place is considered holy for the Hindu community of Mauritius Island. It was only in 1998 that the lake has been declared sacred. There has been a temple constructed which is dedicated to the Lord Shiva and other Indian Gods. This giant statue is known as Mangal Mahadev and is 108 feet high. It is the highest statue constructed in Mauritius Island. The Mangal Mahadev statue has been inaugurated in 2007. The statue looks so huge and forms part of one of the high monuments in the world. Maha Shivaratree is celebrated every year and the Hindu makes a pilgrimage from their home to the sacred lake. There are different Hindu legends about how was born the Ganga Talao. There is a lot of Hindu god statues at Grand Bassin. Hindu Gods are mainly with animals’ heads and human bodies; this is one of the reasons why animals are also considered as sacred for Hindus.
