Mauritius Accident

On January 12, 2011, a Mauritius accident sent 11 people from Bangladesh (Brahmanbaria and Comilla) and 1 from Mauritius to death. The 11 people were in Mauritius for 2 weeks and were garment workers. Other 3 people were injured and hospitalised. The 12 people died in a car accident, while they were going to work. A lorry came into collision with their car and the Mauritius accident happened at around 7.00 o’clock. All the victims were brought to a hospital where the injured ones got treatment. After the Mauritius accident, Wahidur Rahman – the Africa Wing’s Director General of the Foreign Ministry stated to press that the bodies will be brought back in Bangladesh and the injured victims will receive all the needed treatment.

 

He also said that the deceased people were working at sewing machines, at the Pandemonio Co Ltd and arrived in Mauritius at the end of December 2010.

 

According to the director general, who received the information from the honorary consul general, the workers had all insurance coverage and the company will give the money for the bodies return and the injured workers will receive compensations.

 

The authorities said that the bilateral relations between Mauritius and Bangladesh are excellent and workers from Bangladesh come to Mauritius to work in fishing, constructions and garments industries. In the day of this statement, 23 people were also coming to the island to work and more than 12.000 workers from Bangladesh are in Mauritius at work, with work permit. The number of these workers increases every day.

 
 

After the Mauritius accident, the Foreign Minister Dipu Moni has a meeting with the Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade Mauritius Minister- Arvin Boolell. In the name of the Mauritius people and government, the minister expressed the deep regrets and shock for the death of the workers and sent his sympathy to their family members. The minister assured the friend country Bangladesh of some compensations for the ones killed in the Mauritius accident. More, the authorities promised to work as quickest as possible to return the deceased’s bodies in their cities. Unfortunately, this is not a singular Mauritius accident. The authorities have plans of improving the traffic conditions in order to make the accidents number as smallest as possible. Another Mauritius accident had as victim a woman of 33 years old, working at Air Mauritius, Hema Windy Seetohul. While she was driving the car, she suffered an accident in which she lost her life. Before some stressing exams, the woman decided to go out in town with her friends to relax. According to her mother, Hema Windy went out at 22.00 o’clock and had a club as destination. The Mauritius accident happened at the woman’s return home, at about 2 o’clock in the morning, after spending her time in Flic en Flac. She had other 3 friends in her car and the Mauritius accident happened when she tried to overtake other car. The strong impact with a taxi she hit has as result her death.
